Welcome to my first cookbook review!

I wanted to do this video since I am a fan of collecting cookbooks but not using them. To gain some inspiration and learn more about recipe development for my own cookbook one day, I decided to rate and review some great cookbooks I come across.

Today, we will be rating the 28-Day Plant-Powered Health Reboot by registered dieticians and the Food Heaven Made Easy podcasters, Jessica Jones and Wendy Lopez.

This book is more than a cookbook but it's also a plant-based eating guide for folks who want to transition into a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle or incorporate more plant-based foods in your life. This book contains around 100 recipes that "have a healthy balance of carbohydrates, fat, and protein". This is for folks who want to try plant-based food that is delicious and healthy for you.

For this review, I tried:

  1. Creamy Butternut Kale Salad: It was simple to create. The recipe called for hummus but my sister isn't too fond of chickpeas, so I made a tahini dressing instead. Nonetheless, it was filling and good.

  2. Butternut Squash Bean Burgers: A little more ingredients than the last recipe. I felt like the amount of flour they recommended was not the best. My burgers were still wet and sticky and I had to add a lot more. Overall, it was flavorful and filling. I had it with the kale salad.

  3. One-Pot Quinoa Chili: Super simple and flavorful. I loved the spiciness of the jalapenos and the beans and quinoa filled me up.

Ingredients: 4 out of 5

There are no complex ingredients. One can find the majority of these ingredients at the grocery store. And even though they didn't suggest any substitutes, you can easily switch quinoa for rice, chickpeas for white beans, and more.

Instructions: 3 out of 5

The instructions were simple and easy. However, one huge con was the serving size. The majority of the recipes are only 1-2 servings. I had to double and triple up the recipe amount just to have enough food for my family for the week. If you are by yourself and don't meal prep, then you won't have a problem. But for those who feed your family and friends and/or prepare food for your week, be mindful and double up the recipe.

Recipe Variety 5 out of 5

Wendy and Jessica truly give you variety from salads to warm entrees, smoothies to desserts. What I really love is that they created recipes with similar ingredients so they can be paired together for a cost-effective meal plan. When I tried out my recipes, each of them had 2-3 ingredients that were similar such as butternut squash or tomatoes. This way I didn't have to overpay and use an ingredient just once.

Taste: 5 out of 5

Everything was flavorful. I sometimes added my own flairs such as a little jerk seasoning and liquid smoke in the chili but nonetheless, it was delicious.

Price 5 out of 5

100 tasty recipes and a plant-based guide for the $23 market value? I think it's a steal, to be honest. I have paid more for way less.

All in All, the 28-Plant Powered Health Reboot is a great cookbook with health in mind. While it falls short due to the small servings department, it provides simple cost-effective meals for those who are interested in being more plant-based.
