Jamaican Fried Dumplings
When I think of fry dumplings, I think of my childhood. My Auntie Marva used to hand me one of her infamous fry dumplings to eat while she takes me to primary school in Kingston, Jamaica. I loved her fry dumplings so much that I asked her to teach me when she first visited the United States in the early 00’s.
“A likkle a dis. A woleep a dat,” she would say as she concocted magic in the kitchen. I listened and watched attentively. Before I knew it, I taught my college roommate the recipe when she wanted something to complimented her stew. Fry dumplings are so simple, so delicious, and work with so many dishes, Jamaican or not.
Over the years, I made this recipe my own and I want you to do the same. Feel free to add your favorite seasonings to the mixture. Serve along side your soups or spread jam and butter on it. Enjoy and please, feel free to share your creation with me.
Servings: 10 - 12 Dumplings | Cook Time: 40 minutes
Ingredients:
3 cups white flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp butter
3/4 cup water
3/4 canola oil
*Substitute: another vegetable oil (except olive oil)
* Optional: Add 1 tbsp of your favorite seasoning to the flour mix.
* Tips: Have extra flour and water on the side.
Method:
In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt. Mix the contents until it’s evenly dispersed.
Place the butter in a microwave-safe container and microwave until it’s melted
(approx. 10-20seconds).
Add melted butter and water to the flour bowl. Use a utensil to mix contents until it becomes doughy. Knead well until it turns into a smooth dough.
Heat the oil in a large pot. Take a piece of the dough and roll it into a ball.
Once the oil is heated, place the shaped dough into the pot. Fry the dough until it’s golden brown.
Place the dumplings on a paper towel to drain the excess oil.
